Bideford, North Devon and the surrounds

You really don’t need to leave Redland House for the duration of your stay, or if you do you only need take a short stroll down the hill to Instow Village.

However, there is so much in North Devon that it would be a shame to miss out so we have put together a brief guide to give you a flavour of what is at each nearby location.

The Big Sheep is probably one of the biggest family days out in North Devon.  You may have seen it on TV with its racing sheep!  Worth a day out if the weather is not so good as you can spend a whole day there.  They make their own beer and have a nice gift shop above the café which is worth a look.

Abbotsham also has a pub called The Thatched Inn.  It offers good value pub grub with a beer garden.  For Halloween they really go to town with the decorations!

View from Redland House to Appledore(6 miles from Redland House by road)

This pretty fishing village is across the river from Instow and until recently there was a ferry taking foot passengers from Instow to Appledore.  There is talk of reinstating the ferry and we are all hoping that this happens in 2010.

To visit now you will have to go by car which is a trip of only 6 miles.  It is well worth the trip as you will be able to spend time wandering around the narrow cobbled streets which have many antique shops, book shops and art galleries.  Appledore now puts on two great festivals – the Appledore Arts Festival and the Book Festival.

The George pub is worth a visit serving great food in the quaint restaurant with huge picture window right next to the river.   There is also a really good fish and chip shop – Sylvesters in Meeting Street.

(6 miles from Redland House)

Barnstaple is the main town for North Devon.  It has all of the major stores such as Monsoon, Next and Fat Face so is worth a day out to go shopping.  Banburys is the main independent department store in the High Street which is worth a visit.

The best days to visit Barnstaple are Tuesdays and Saturdays as the Pannier Market is in operation.  Here you can buy from local food and craft suppliers a range of some of the best local produce around.

Next to the Pannier Market is Butchers Row which is open every day with quaint open fronted shops.  Make sure you go in to East West bakery for their speciality breads and the best chocolate brownie around!

View of Bideford Quay(3 miles from Redland House)

Bideford is a working port and very different from Barnstaple with many more independent shops such as La Maison in Mill Street selling beautiful shabby chic homeware and jewellery, or Ashore in Cooper Street selling a beautiful range of gifts and jewellery.  There are also a number of antique shops.

The Pannier Market is open on a Tuesday and Saturday morning at the top of the town and is worth a trek up the High Street.  Go before 12 as it packs up about 1pm.

Velvet and VanillaThere are a couple of good places to go for something to eat in Bideford.  Lathwells in Cooper Street serves well prepared local food.  Velvet and Vanilla, also in Cooper Street is a funky coffee shop during the day and bistro at night.  Very girly, small but well worth a visit.

Devon Cream tea(4 miles from Redland House)

You can cycle or walk to Fremington Quay from Instow and there you will find a café/bistro overlooking the River Taw.  It serves lovely cakes and food as well as evening meals.

Fremington also has Graylings chip shop, serving good fish and chips and Han Court Chinese restaurant which is a  good place to go for a group, plenty of atmosphere and lovely food.

(11 miles from Redland House)

At Torrington there is the Dartington Crystal factory which offers tours of the factory, a cafe and shopping area.

Torrington is a small rural town but has a number of other attractions such as the Plough Arts centre which often has interesting exhibitions and plays.

Just outside of Torrington is RHS Rosemoor.  This beautiful garden can be visited any time of the year and there will be interest.

Tapeley Park Instow(1.5 miles from Redland House)

Westleigh is the village adjacent to Instow.  Just before you get to Westleigh is Tapeley Park.  This stunning stateley home is sitated in magnificent gardens with terraced Italian lawns housing an ornamental summerhouse and palm trees on the bottom terrace giving a tropical atmosphere.

The Westleigh Inn is in the heart of the village and worth a visit.  It has a large garden with play equipment for the children and serves a good Sunday roast.
Westward Ho!

Westward Ho! is a great beach loved by surfers and families alike.  The vast pebble reach encloses the burrows where you will see wild horses grazing.  Ideal for lazing about on a hot day whilst the kids build sandcastles.
